What is Inflammatory Wrist Pain?

If your wrist hurts all the time and in all ranges of motion, then you are very likely suffering from wrist pain caused by inflammation. In our practice, we commonly refer to this as “inflammatory wrist pain.”

Note: If your wrist doesn’t hurt all the time or in all ranges of motion, then please click over to our Wrist and Carpal Pain Relief page to find out how to specifically pinpoint and treat the source of your wrist pain.

In the following video, Dr. Tarek Adra walks you through the basics of inflammation wrist pain.

How to Improve Inflammatory Wrist Pain

Before embarking on this or any other self-treatment plan, please rule out any possible bone fractures or muscle/ligament tears with a medical professional. Also, autoimmune conditions are best handled by a medical professional.

If you have inflammatory pain, the most important thing is to STOP any wrist exercises for the time being. Exercising an inflamed wrist can easily cause more damage and make your pain worse. It is crucial to first reduce the inflammation; then, you can move forward towards healing.

  • Before embarking on stretches or exercises, take care of the inflammation.
  • Use BRICE to rest and support your wrist – we’ll tell you exactly how it works.
  • Use four key supplements to support reduced inflammation and tissue healing.
  • Assess daily habits to see if you’re doing anything to limit blood flow to your wrists – because blood flow is essential for healing.

BRICE: Brace, Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate

If you have inflammatory wrist pain, BRICE (Brace, Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) can be an extremely useful method to support your healing. In the video below, we walk you through the BRICE strategy.

  • A properly-made Brace will stabilize the hand and wrist area, provide effective Compression, and support ideal blood flow.  (We at Kinetix365 recommend the Incrediwear wrist brace, but if you already have a wrist brace, then feel free to use that!)
    • Note: For inflammation, blood flow support is especially important. If you’ve been relying entirely on compression, and perhaps wrapping the area too tightly, you could be slowing blood flow and impeding the reduction of inflammation. Make sure you can slip a finger between the brace and your wrist to ensure it is not too tight.
  • Rest translates to active rest, including activities such as walking and swimming. Gentle movements within a pain-free range of movement can be productive, but don’t overdo it. If you’re moving into pain, you could be extending your inflammatory condition duration.
  • Apply Ice to the area in 20-minute blocks of time, about three times each day.
  • Finally, Elevate is usually optional. If you can comfortably elevate your wrist while relaxing at home, for example, then you can add it to your routine.

Follow the above guidelines until you consistently no longer have pain in all ranges of motion.

Supplements for Wrist Pain Caused By Inflammation

Supplements are proven to help speed healing in an inflammatory condition, which is a foundational component of your recovery process. We recommend the following supplements for inflammation:

  • Turmeric: In clinical doses, turmeric reduces inflammation – which means that it’s not enough to simply add a sprinkle of turmeric to your food or drink. Dosages for healing are much higher than the typical amounts used in food, and should ideally be paired with other ingredients to promote absorption.
  • Chelated Magnesium: Chelated magnesium is the form of magnesium most effectively absorbed by your body. Much like calcium is food for the bones, magnesium is the food for muscles and fascia. Other forms of magnesium are not generally a good match for pain reduction and healing purposes. For instance, magnesium carbonate is used in a popular stress reduction supplement and magnesium hydrate is used as a laxative. Our chelated magnesium is specifically sourced and formulated for optimal healing.
  • Omega-3 Fish Oil: Supports connective tissue/joint health and strength.
  • Topical Cream: Inflammation reduction and pain relief you can apply when and where you need it most.

Whether you choose to purchase your supplements from us or another source, this specific series of supplements has been clinically proven to provide the most effective reduction of inflammation pain. If you already have your own collection of supplements, the video below will help you determine if you’re taking the correct forms of supplements at the ideal dosages.

Fundamentals for Relieving Inflammatory Wrist Pain

The Fundamentals component of our pain relief programs is designed to help you literally evaluate every move you make every day. You’ll assess how you sleep, exercise, work, and even use your phone, so that you can determine if there are specific movements or habits that are restricting blood flow and contributing to inflammation.

For example, if your wrists or elbows are frequently in a bent position (while sleeping, typing on a keyboard, etc.), the limitations on effective blood flow can slow your healing considerably.

Here are some core Fundamentals you will cover as part of your wrist pain treatment protocol:

  • Sleep: Are you sleeping with bent wrists?
  • Typing: Do you put weight on your wrists as you type? Are your arms closed in and restricting blood flow at your shoulders?
  • Grabbing/holding: Are you carrying around a heavy purse or bag for much of the day, specifically in the crook of your arm? Is your heavy bag strap limiting blood flow to your elbow and/or wrist? Do you spend hours a day using your phone?
  • Daily exercises: Do you do exercises that involve pushing your body weight into the base of your wrists, restricting blood flow? Can you adjust your hand or finger position to reduce strain on your wrists?

In the Kinetix clinic, we’ve seen even the most basic of daily habits lead to excruciating pain. By taking a closer look at your everyday movements, you can try to adjust those habits to reduce repetitive strain on your wrists. If you’d like to be guided through this process, then please feel free to sign up for our At-Home Wrist Inflammation Treatment package.
