Effective Pain Relief in Three Simple Steps

  1. Determine the cause/source of your pain.
  2. Learn the three basic causes of neck pain and why knowing yours is crucial.
  3. Implement practical, easy steps to reduce your neck pain.
  1. Determine the cause/source of your pain.

First, we need to check that your neck pain isn’t related to an injury or medical condition.

If you’ve recently experienced a physical trauma (for example, a car accident), you might have neck pain caused by an injury. Swelling and bruising are major red flags, and could be a sign that you have neck pain due to a ligament/muscle tear or a fracture. If so, your first priority is to seek treatment from a medical professional.

Or, you might have neck pain from an autoimmune condition or chronic illness. There are many conditions that can be tied to chronic pain, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis. If you have been diagnosed with one of these or a similar condition, or believe you might be suffering from a related illness, please see your doctor.

If you might have an injury or medical condition, an at-home pain relief protocol might not be the right fit at this time.

Then, we can pinpoint the most likely source of your pain – and all it takes is a simple questionnaire.

Odds are, you care far more about your treatment than you do the actual cause of your pain. But learning about your pain is key, because it ensures that you’re matched with the right treatment approach – there’s no one-size-fits-all option here.

Usually, neck pain fits neatly into one of three categories: Inflammatory, Nerve, or Mechanical.

  • If you have Inflammatory neck pain, it’s time to hit pause on any exercises or stretches. Treating the inflammation itself is your first step. We’ll help you find the supplements and techniques that will reduce inflammation, so you can move forward with pain relief.
  • Nerve-related neck pain requires specialized nerve flossing/mobilization strategies, not standard stretching. We’ll work to get your nerve “unstuck,” all while equipping your body with the supplements it needs to effectively heal.
  • Mechanical neck pain is extremely common, and directly related to a certain movement and/or the way you sleep, stand, sit, walk, or even breathe. We’ll examine your everyday routines to find the culprit, then rebuild better habits for reduced pain.

Eight Easy Questions

Exactly how do you find out what type of pain you’re up against? Our experts have developed a short and simple questionnaire – just eight questions – that will give you the answers you need.

Answer yes or no to the following questions:

  1. Does your neck hurt in all or many ranges of motion?
  2. Is your neck constantly hurting throughout the day?

If you answered yes to either of these questions:

  • Your neck pain is likely tied to Inflammation.
  • If so, you can choose to jump ahead to our section on Inflammatory Pain.

If you answered no, or aren’t quite sure, please continue with the next set of questions.

  1. Have you noticed sharp, shooting pains in your neck, especially when you move it in a certain way?
  2. Is there numbness, tingling, or sensations of hot/cold in your neck area?

If you answered yes to either of these questions:

  • A stuck nerve may be causing your neck pain.
  • If so, you have the option to move ahead to our section on Nerve Pain.

If you answered no, or aren’t quite sure, please continue.

  1. Has anything in your life changed recently and led to shifts in your lifestyle? For example, are you now working from home, starting a new exercise routine, or have a new baby?
  2. Does it seem like your neck hurts more first thing in the morning, but then improves as you “get moving” throughout the day?
  3. Conversely, does your neck pain increase over a span of time, reaching its worst after a certain activity or at the end of the day?
  4. Does your neck mainly hurt in a certain range of motion?

If you answered yes to any of these questions:

  • Your neck pain is probably a mechanical issue. This means that there is a certain movement, habit, or aspect of your lifestyle causing your pain.

So, here’s where we are now: you’ve determined what kind of neck pain you’re dealing with, so we can guide you towards a personalized pain relief protocol. In just a few minutes, you’ve already made solid progress… if you ask us, that’s a pretty big win.

2. Learn the three basic causes of neck pain and why knowing yours is crucial.

In order for pain relief to be truly effective, it must be achieved using a program that’s tailored to your specific type and cause of pain. Otherwise, you might get short-term results – if you get any results at all – but you won’t be able to find a real solution.

This is why most neck pain treatment programs deliver disappointing results.

Inflammation Pain

Inflammatory neck pain is usually indicated by constant pain in just about every range of motion. Typically, the inflammation is produced by a recent or ongoing injury.

If you have Inflammatory Pain, STOP all neck exercises.

Exercise and inflammation don’t mix well. What’s more, neck pain exercises could be making your discomfort even worse – and even lead to long-term damage. Instead, we need to reduce the inflammation before attempting any kind of exercise.

  • First, focus on inflammation relief.
  • Incorporate effective supplements for inflammation and healing into your daily routine.

Nerve Pain

Nerve-related neck pain can often be easily pinpointed, because of the unique symptoms: shooting pains, numbness, tingling, and even hot/cold sensations. You might have just one of these symptoms or all, or they might come and go. A nerve pain condition is tied to trauma to the nerve(s), which accumulates scar tissue that “traps” the nerve and produces pain.

If you have Nerve Pain, STOP any neck stretches and DON’T move forward with a surgery just yet.

With nerve pain, your focus should shift to:

  • Specialized, nerve-specific mobilizations (called “flosses”), that will help the “stuck” nerve become free.
  • Supplements that support faster, more effective healing of the nerves.

You may have been told that stretching is the solution to your problem. Or, you might be in the process of planning for surgery as we speak. But if this is the first you’re hearing of nerve-specific mobilizations, it’s a good sign that you haven’t yet been given a real solution – that is, until now.

Mechanical Pain

Do you find yourself saying, “My neck only hurts when I do __”? Neck pain at certain times of day, in specific ranges of motion, or after a certain activity is usually an indication of a mechanical pain condition. Here, your solution is to remove the trigger (a habit or movement) that is leading to tiny, repetitive injuries, known as microtraumas. Then, you can start healing your neck.

If you have Mechanical Pain, IMMEDIATELY assess your everyday habits and movements to locate the problem.

There are two basic reasons that mechanical pain occurs. Either you’re moving your neck in a way that’s causing pain; or, you’re moving another part of your body in a way that’s forcing your neck to overcompensate.

So, the solution is to:

  • Break down exactly how you sit, walk, stand, work, breathe, and sleep to find and remedy any potential “bad habits.”
  • Begin targeted muscle releases to optimize your body as a whole, so no one part is experiencing undue strain.

Neck Pain Caused by Multiple Conditions and Issues

Here’s the deal: about 70% of people will fall squarely into one of the three categories above, making treatment pretty straightforward. For about 30% of people, treatment can be a little trickier. Sometimes, neck pain gets complicated, thanks to issues with circulation on top of mechanical, inflammatory, or nerve conditions.

But being in that 30% doesn’t mean you’re stuck here. All it means is that you’re going to need just a little extra support before you try treatment.

Neck Pain Exercises and Stretches

Depending on where you’re at in your treatment process, you might already be doing stretches or exercises for neck pain. Maybe you found a few ideas online, or maybe you’re working from a sheet that a physical therapist gave you – wherever you got the exercises, we’re going to suggest putting them on pause. As in, right now.

Then, let us explain exactly why those routines aren’t doing you any good, and what you could be doing instead.

Supplements for Neck Pain

You might be surprised at just how capable your body is at healing itself – especially when you’re supplying it with plenty of support. The right supplements don’t just help you heal more quickly, they can also help you manage your pain in the meantime.

By now, you’ve figured out that we’re all about keeping it simple. So, you aren’t going to see us recommending a long list of expensive supplements that you don’t actually need. Instead, we’ve put together a guide to the basics, breaking it down into the three types of neck pain.

BRICE: Brace, Rest and Ice

If your neck pain is caused by inflammation, BRIC (Brace, Rest, Ice, Compression) is a hugely useful tool that is essential in supporting your progress.

Use a high-quality Brace to stabilize the area, offer effective compression, and support healthy blood flow.

  • Note: For inflammation,  blood flow is a key component of your healing. Using compression on its own (and possibly using a too-tight compression wrap) can slow blood flow and actually halt inflammation reduction.

Rest is active rest, based on gentle movements within a range that don’t cause you any pain. Finally, Ice your neck in 20-minute spans of time, about three times a day.

Follow these guidelines for 7-14 days before moving forward with exercises and stretches.
